Richard “Beebo” Russell was a 29-year-old ground service worker at Seattle-Tacoma Airport. On August 10, 2018, he did something that shocked the entire aviation world: He stole an empty Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 from the airport. Despite having no pilot’s license, he managed to start the engines and take off. He flew around for over an hour, performing dangerous stunts like loops and barrel rolls. Air traffic controllers tried to help him land, but he refused. In the end, he intentionally crashed the plane on Ketron Island, killing only himself. The FBI later confirmed there was no terrorism, just a tragic mental health crisis. A sad, surreal moment in aviation history.
